Mint species are perennial, aromatic herbs characterized by vigorous vegetative growth and essential oil production.

Distribution and Habitat

There are approximately 13–25 natural species of mint. The exact number varies because mint species hybridize very easily with each other and intermediate forms frequently occur. In addition, there are many cultivated hybrids, the most well-known being Mentha × piperita (peppermint). In fact, mint is considered a classic example of a botanically “confusing” genus.

Mint species are native to Europe, Asia, and Africa.  They prefer temperate regions and moist environments such as riverbanks, marshy soils, and wet meadows. Today, mint is found on all continents, including North and South America and Australia.  Its global distribution is largely the result of human cultivation. Prefers moist soils, riverbanks, meadows, and cultivated gardens.

Here are some of the most well-known mint species:

Mentha spicata or Mentha crispa – spearmint (used for tea)

Mentha × piperita – peppermint

Mentha arvensis – field mint (or wild mint)

Mentha aquatica – water mint

Mentha longifolia – horse mint

Mentha suaveolens – apple mint

These are among the most commonly recognized and used mint species worldwide.

Botanical and Morphological Description

  • Root: Creeping rhizomatous root system, allowing rapid spread.
    • Stem: Quadrangular (square in cross-section), erect or ascending, branched, often slightly pubescent.
    • Leaves: Opposite arrangement, simple, petiolate, ovate to lanceolate, serrated margins, glandular trichomes containing essential oils.
    • Flowers are small, bilabiate (two-lipped), typical of Lamiaceae, arranged in verticillasters or terminal spikes, with white, pink, or purple colors. The calyx is tubular with five teeth; corolla four-lobed. The fruit is schizocarp dividing into four nutlets, the seeds are small, smooth, brown.

Key Identification Features: strong menthol aroma, square stem, opposite serrated leaves, spreading rhizomes.
