Maltese Savory – Traditional uses in folk medicine

Traditional uses in folk medicine:

Malta (Mediterranean tradition):

  • Herbal infusions for digestive disorders (bloating, mild cramps)
  • Mild antiseptic and respiratory remedy (coughs, colds)

Romania / Hungary / Latvia:

  • Rarely used traditionally; sometimes substituted with other Lamiaceae (thyme, oregano)

Like many Lamiaceae plants, it contains essential oils, giving it a pleasant scent and mild medicinal properties. In some regions, it has been used similarly to thyme, for herbal infusions or as a flavoring herb, although it is less known and less widely used.

Historically, plants of the Micromeria genus were valued in local folk traditions for their digestive and calming effects, but they never became as important as thyme or mint.

One interesting aspect is that such small aromatic plants were often gathered by local people in Mediterranean areas as part of a “wild herb culture,” where communities relied on naturally growing herbs for everyday needs.
