Thyme has long been associated with the soul and courage. This symbolism originates from ancient times and was later adopted into Christian tradition. It was considered a plant that strengthens the soul and vital energy. In the Middle Ages, thyme became a symbol of chivalry. Women would give embroidered tokens with thyme to knights. It symbolized courage and moral purity.
Thyme was also burned as a cleansing herb in both churches and homes. It was believed to drive away evil and promote spiritual purity.
