Sage – Traditional uses in folk medicine
Traditional uses in folk medicine:
- In Romanian folk medicine, sage tea is widely used for sore throat, gingivitis, and mouth inflammations (as gargle).
- Traditionally used to reduce excessive sweating.
- Women used sage infusions for menopausal symptoms.
- In rural areas, sage leaves were sometimes burned for their aromatic smoke.
Unusual, traditional folk uses:
- It was regarded as “the herb of immortality.”
- For sore throats, it was not only drunk as a tea but also smoked, and the smoke was inhaled.
- For toothaches, fresh leaves were chewed.
- Belief: where sage grows, “the people living in the house do not die soon.”
