Mint – Traditional uses in folk medicine

Traditional uses in folk medicine:

  • In Romania, mint tea (“ceai de mentă”) is one of the most commonly used household remedies for digestive disorders, bloating, and nausea.
    • Traditionally used for biliary dyskinesia and stomach cramps.
    • Peppermint oil is used externally for headaches (applied to temples).
    • Fresh mint is used in Romanian cuisine, especially in lamb dishes and traditional summer lemonades.
    • In folk practices, mint was placed in rooms for its refreshing scent and believed to “purify” the air.

Unusual,  traditional folk uses:

  • Crushed leaves were rubbed on the forehead to relieve dizziness
    • Smelled directly to ease motion sickness or nausea
    • Placed in beds as a natural insect repellent
