Does Stinging Nettle Have an Essential Oil?
Technically, yes – but only a tiny amount.
When we think of essential oils, plants such as lavender, peppermint or lemon balm may come to mind. Stinging nettle is very different.
Researchers have managed to isolate and analyse volatile oil from Urtica dioica, but the reported yield can be around 0.01% of the dried plant material – only about one hundredth of one percent. Its chemical composition also varies considerably between samples and studies.
This helps explain why we rarely hear about “nettle essential oil” in herbal practice. Nettle is sometimes even described as a plant that does not meaningfully produce essential oil.
Instead, modern research focuses overwhelmingly on its leaves and roots and the compounds that can be extracted from them.
So while nettle essential oil exists from a chemical point of view, in practical medicinal research it is much more of a scientific curiosity than a commonly used herbal preparation.
