What Gives Wild Thyme Its Power?
Wild thyme contains two quite different groups of natural compounds, depending on whether we look at its extracts or its essential oil.
Alcoholic and hydroalcoholic extracts of Thymus serpyllum are rich in polyphenols. Important compounds include rosmarinic acid and caffeic acid derivatives, together with chlorogenic acid-related compounds and flavonoids such as rutin, quercetin, luteolin and apigenin derivatives. These substances are studied mainly for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Wild thyme essential oil has a very different composition. Two of its most characteristic compounds are thymol and carvacrol, accompanied by substances such as cymene, γ-terpinene, geraniol, linalool and borneol. These volatile compounds are particularly associated with antimicrobial and respiratory effects.
However, wild thyme essential oil can vary considerably from one plant population to another. Some oils contain much more thymol, others more carvacrol or different combinations of terpenes. This chemical variability is one reason why knowing exactly which preparation was studied is so important.
