Why Can Two Wild Thyme Oils Be So Different?
Two bottles of essential oil made from the same species of wild thyme may not contain exactly the same balance of active compounds.
Wild thyme is known for its chemotype diversity. This means that plants belonging to the same species can produce essential oils with quite different chemical profiles.
Some wild thyme oils are rich in thymol, while others may contain more carvacrol, geraniol, linalool or other volatile compounds. Geography, growing conditions and the characteristics of the individual plant population can all influence the final composition.
This is not merely a difference in fragrance. These compounds have different biological properties, so changes in their proportions can also affect how an essential oil behaves.
Wild thyme therefore provides a fascinating example of an important principle in herbal science: the botanical name tells us which plant we have – but it does not always tell us exactly what is inside its essential oil.
