What is Sage?
Sage, known in Latin as Salvia officinalis, is one of the most well-known medicinal plants in Europe. It has been used for thousands of years, not only for healing, but also in everyday life – in the kitchen, in the home, and in simple daily routines.
Its name carries an important meaning. The word salvia comes from the Latin salvare, which means “to save” or “to heal.” This already shows how people thought about this plant in the past: not just as a herb, but as something valuable and protective.
Sage is a quiet, modest plant. It does not stand out at first glance, yet it has always been present – in gardens, in recipes, and in family traditions. Many people grew up with it without even realising how much knowledge was connected to it.
A plant that people did not question – they simply trusted.
