Can the Smell of Rosemary Make You More Alert?

Rosemary’s strong, fresh aroma is more than simply a pleasant smell. It has also become a subject of scientific research.

Rosemary essential oil contains volatile compounds such as 1,8-cineole, α-pinene and camphor. Because these compounds reach our sensory system when the oil is inhaled, researchers have investigated whether rosemary aroma can influence alertness and mental performance.

Human studies have produced some intriguing results. In one clinical setting, night-shift workers who inhaled rosemary essential oil reported less drowsiness and greater alertness. Other research in healthy adults has also explored changes in alertness and aspects of cognitive performance after rosemary aroma exposure.

This does not mean that simply smelling a rosemary plant will automatically improve memory or concentration. The studies used particular essential-oil preparations under controlled conditions.

But they do provide an interesting scientific perspective on something people have long noticed about rosemary: its powerful aroma can feel remarkably stimulating.
