How to Avoid Confusing Medicinal Chamomile with Similar Species

• Check the flower center (receptacle): True chamomile has a hollow cone-shaped center when cut lengthwise. Many look-alikes have a solid center.
• Smell the plant: Medicinal chamomile has a pleasant, apple-like aroma. If the smell is weak, unpleasant, or absent, it may not be the right species.
• Observe the petals: The white petals of true chamomile often bend downward as the flower matures.
• Look at the leaves: Chamomile has very fine, feathery leaves, almost thread-like.
• Pay attention to height and structure: It usually grows as a delicate, branched plant, not too rigid or coarse.
