Lemon Balm: What Do We Really Know?

Lemon balm has a long reputation as a calming herb, and modern research provides some support for this traditional image – but with important qualifications.

Among the more promising areas are sleep and insomnia, where a standardized extract has produced positive results in a controlled human study. Research into anxiety and mood also shows encouraging findings, although the available evidence is still limited and depends greatly on the population and preparation studied.

Topical lemon balm extract has also shown promising clinical results for cold sores, making this an interesting example of a traditional herb being investigated for a very specific application.

Essential oil research tells a somewhat different story. Inhalation studies suggest possible benefits for sleep and stress, but the findings are not always consistent.

Once again, the preparation matters. Lemon balm tea, a standardized extract, a skin cream and lemon balm essential oil are not interchangeable. Positive results from one preparation should not automatically be applied to all the others.
