Distribution and Habitat

Ruta graveolens is native to the Mediterranean region, particularly southern Europe. It has been cultivated since ancient times and is now naturalized in many parts of the world, including Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, North and South America, and North Africa.

Ruta graveolens typically grows in dry, sunny locations. It is commonly found on rocky slopes, hillsides, roadsides, and in gardens.

The plant prefers well-drained, calcareous (lime-rich) soils and tolerates poor, dry conditions. It is also drought-resistant and thrives in warm climates with plenty of sunlight.

• Stem: Woody at base, branched
• Leaves: Alternate, bipinnate or tripinnate, bluish-green; glandular (aromatic)
• Flowers: are yellow, with 4–5 petals, 8-10 stamens, superior ovary. The flowers are arranged in inflorescences (cymes)
• Fruit: Capsule
