The Science Behind Calendula’s Golden Flowers

Calendula’s brilliant yellow and orange flowers are not just beautiful. Their colour is connected to some of the plant’s interesting natural chemistry.

The flowers contain carotenoids, a family of natural pigments responsible for many of the yellow, orange and red colours we see in plants. But calendula’s flowers also contain another scientifically important group of compounds: triterpenoid esters, particularly faradiol esters.

These compounds have attracted attention because of their anti-inflammatory activity and are considered important chemical markers of calendula flowers.

Interestingly, the way calendula is prepared influences which compounds are extracted. Different proportions of water and alcohol can favour different parts of its chemical profile. This helps explain why a calendula tea, tincture, extract, ointment and essential oil should not be thought of as chemically identical preparations.

So behind calendula’s familiar golden flowers lies a surprisingly complex mixture of pigments, polyphenols and specialized plant compounds.
