Where Does Wild Thyme Have the Strongest Evidence?

Human research on Thymus serpyllum is still relatively limited, but two areas are particularly interesting: digestive health and respiratory symptoms.

A randomized placebo-controlled study investigated an essential-oil-free wild thyme extract in overweight adults with functional gastrointestinal problems. The study reported improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms and stool frequency, as well as quality of life. This provides some encouraging human evidence for the non-volatile extract, although more clinical studies are needed.

The volatile side of thyme has attracted attention particularly in respiratory research. A recent clinical study found that inhalation of thyme oil reduced symptoms such as breathlessness, cough and secretions in people with COPD.

However, an important caution is needed here: the study refers broadly to thyme oil, and the exact species formulation needs to be interpreted carefully. It therefore supports interest in thyme volatile preparations, but should not be taken as definitive evidence specifically for every Thymus serpyllum essential oil.

Other possible applications, including metabolic health, inflammation, asthma and anxiety, are being investigated, but much of this evidence is still preliminary or comes from laboratory and animal research.
